Darrell Bluhm Sensei began his Aikido training in 1970 as a student at UC Santa Cruz. In 1973 he spent two months living at the Iwama dojo in Ibaraki prefecture, Japan, training with M. Saito Shihan, as well as time training at Hombu dojo in Tokyo. In 1981 he became a student of T.K. Chiba Shihan and a founding member and assistant instructor of San Diego Aikikai. In 1983 he founded Siskiyou Aikikai in Ashland, Oregon where he has taught Aikido and Tai Chi Chuan for the past 33 years and the Feldenkrais Method for 20 years. In 1996 he was promoted to 6th Dan, in 2002 awarded Shihan title by Chiba Sensei, and in 2006 received Shihan recognition from Doshu M. Ueshiba at Hombu Dojo. He serves as a member of the Senior Council of Birankai North America.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t Aikido and Iaido are Ways to refine and improve one\u2019s character through discipline, respect toward others, tempering negative reactions and responses, and commitment to training. \u00a0Enjoy practice.<\/em><\/p> Nomura Sensei began aikido training in 1975. In 1979, she co-founded West Los Angeles Aikido Institute. In 1981, she began training with T. Kazuo Chiba Shihan in aikido, weapons, and iaido. In 1982, she began iaido training with Takeshi Mitsuzuka, Grand Master of San Shin Kai, Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido. She founded Aikido Institute of San Francisco in June, 1999. T.K. Chiba Shihan promoted Nomura Sensei sixth Dan in January, 2000, and to Birankai Shihan in January, 2002. She was certified as Shihan by Aikikai Hombu, Tokyo, Japan in November, 2006. Nomura Sensei was certified as 7th Dan by Aikikai Hombu dojo in January of 2017. She\u00a0is a member of t<\/span>he Senior Council of Birankai North America.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t DiAnne Sensei first studied with Tai Unno Sensei at the University of Massachusetts in 1970. She later trained under Aikido masters Mitsunari Kanai and Yoshimitsu Yamada. She traveled to Japan in 1976 for training at the Aikikai Hombu Dojo, where she received private training from T. K. Chiba Shihan. \u00a0While studying in Tokyo she was also an Iaido student under the late Mitsuzuka Takeshi Sensei, hachidan. She returned to the US in 1979 and opened Amherst Aikikai with Paul Sylvain. She was invited to become the Chief Instructor of Aikido of Berkeley in 1985 to replace the late Steve Sasaki. She returned to the eastern US in 1987 and opened her own dojo, Aikido of Springfield, in Springfield, MA, in October of 1988. She was awarded the title of Shihan by Chiba Sensei in 2002, and attained the rank of sixth dan in Iaido. Dianne Shihan has retired from active teaching.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t With breath and movement we facilitate growth and\u00a0awareness thru dynamic interconnectedness.<\/em><\/p> Kristina Varjan began studying Aikido at New York Aikikai, under Yoshimitsu Yamada Shihan, in 1975, while working as a professional dancer.\u00a0In 1986 she and her husband, Rikko, moved to New Mexico and began training under T.K. Chiba Shihan. They moved to San Diego and joined the kenshusei program in 1989. After graduating, they returned to New Mexico for some years before moving to Hawaii and founding Kohala Aikikai in 1995.\u00a0Varjan Sensei teaches seminars in the U.S. and Europe and is member of BNA\u2019s Senior Council. She has also been a Feldenkrais Practitioner since 2003.\u00a0<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t Wash your stinky, dirty gi. Lynn Sensei began training in Aikido in 1971. She trained in Chicago under the late A. Tohei Shihan, and continued her training in San Francisco and in Berkeley, CA. From 1990 — 1994 she was\u00a0kenshusei\u00a0<\/em>in the teacher’s training program conducted by I. Shibata Shihan at Berkeley Aikikai. She founded Eastshore Aikikai in September 1991.\u00a0 She was General Secretary of the United States Aikido Federation, Western Region, from 1984 — 2001, and General Secretary of Birankai North America from 2001 — 2006. In April, 2007 she was awarded the title of Shihan in BNA by T. K. Chiba Shihan.\u00a0 She is the former Chair of the Senior Council of Birankai North America.\u00a0<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t Aikido is a way of life for me. \u00a0It defines who I am: \u00a0how I approach life, how I communicate with the world, how I move my body. \u00a0It both energizes and empowers me.<\/em><\/p> Crane Sensei began her Aikido training in 1978 while at the University of California, San Diego, where she was studying for a visual arts degree. In 1981, Aikido became a stronger focus in her life when she commenced studying with T.K. Chiba Shihan, who had just moved to San Diego from Japan. From 1981, Aikido training became an integral part of her life. In April of 1991, she founded the North County Aikikai, renting a room in a nearby church. The school has\u00a0since grown into its present, large and airy facility in Solana Beach, CA. Crane Sensei was awarded the title of Shihan in the New Year of 2008. Her study of the martial arts also includes Iaido, the art of Japanese swordsmanship and Zazen sitting meditation.
